WOW!!! This truly is one of the BEST images we've ever taken!
Shortly after midnight, we witnessed something we've only dreamed of capturing...the Aurora Australis in all its glory. We heard a whisper the Aurora may fire up & as we've never taken a shot of it before let alone seen it, we jumped in our motorhome & headed to this old jetty just outside of Queenstown & set up camp. When we got here, it was subtle on the horizon & then BOOM...it started going off!
The Aurora itself is actually caused by solar winds & the collision of energetically charged particles with atoms in the earths atmosphere. We got incredibly lucky with this shot & managed to capture a proton arc (the bright beam right of frame) along with green/magenta "curtains" of folding light that were constantly changing shape. Another image we will post at a later date, we even captured the Milky Way with the Aurora & even a green "picket fence".
Capturing the Aurora is so difficult within itself, but being able to compose it with snow capped mountains & this beautiful old jetty makes this image so much more special & something we will never forget!
