The Point Lowly lighthouse near Whyalla was constructed in 1883 to guide ships safely through the Spencer Gulf en route to Port Augusta & Port Pirie in South Australia. It stood the test of time for many years before being deactivated in 1993 but was thankfully reactivated in 1995 by popular demand & is currently a tourist attraction in this remote part of the Eyre Peninsula.
When we first laid eyes on this beautiful lighthouse many years ago, we couldn’t wait to shoot it. We have seen very few images of this place over the years & it’s little wonder why. Off the main H’way & quite a bit of a drive from the local mining & steelwork towns of Whyalla & Iron Knob, we decided to stay here & shoot for a few days. This was a long exposure taken shortly after sunset one afternoon & a real stand out from all the other shoots we had here.
As some of you may know, our favourite colours to photograph are the pastel pink & purple hues of a reverse sunrise or sunset. This long exposure really calmed down the choppy sea & gives the scene a real feeling of calm in what is quite easily one of the oldest & most fascinating lighthouses we have ever had the pleasure of shooting in Australia.
